How to Increase Your Personal Hub Score (aka Hubber Score)

83

By DonnaWallace

It's basic HubPages knowledge: Your personal Hub Score (aka, your hubber score) will determines you are, who reads your hubs, and how much money you earn. The bottom line is clear: If no one reads your hubs, then you don't get paid. So you need visitors so you can get paid by Google AdSense.

But many of us are confused by all of the magic. Exactly how is the hub score determined? How does it work? Why does the hub score matter? The purpose of this article is to tell you a bit more about this mystical number. And perhaps I can answer some of your questions.

Where Do I Find My Hub Score?

Like all HubPage authors, you have a personal Hub Score (some people call it a hubber score). This mystical little number is located on the bottom right hand side of your icon. Just look at one of your hubs, and you will see it in a little box on the right side of your picture. These numbers range from 1 - 100, where 100 is the highest number that you can achieve.

My number usually ranks somewhere between an 85 and a 90, and I'm pretty happy with it. This means that I probably won't get front page coverage any time soon, but I'm still learning. As I learn more about Hub Pages and work harder, I hope that my number will increase. And I hope to eventually become a steady 98 or 99.

Don't be confused by the fact that your articles (or hubs) also have hub scores. This article focuses on your personal hub score, which is the number under your icon. Future articles will address the individual article scores.

What is a Good Hub Score?

A good hub score is all a matter of personal preference. Some people aim high, and want to see a steady number in the 90s or above. Others, like me, are happy in the 80s. But the truth is that we all want to stay above 75. If you are above 75, then your hub links will appear elsewhere on the site. If you go lower than that number, then your links become dead ends and readers won't be able to find you. So no matter what, try to keep your hub score higher than a 75.

Expect the Numbers to Change

Before we delve too deep into the finer points of your personal hub score (aka, your hubber score), I should tell you a secret: your hub score will change a lot. Sometimes it will change daily. But don't worry about small changes. They are bound to happen. Just as long as your numbers are in a generally acceptable range, you'll be okay.

Make Sure You Write Well

It all boils down to one thing: If you want to have a good ranking, you have to produce well written hubs. It actually does make sense. After all, when businesses want their customers to keep coming back, those businesses need to produce a high quality product.

So that will be our secret ingredient: In order to receive a high personal hub score, we need to produce well-written, high quality hubs. We need to find subjects that interest our audience, create an interesting thesis, and support our theories with examples and suggestions. It's a great idea; I think it just might work! (Okay, so I'm throwing a bit of humor in there.)

Keep your articles interesting, and make sure they have a decent word length. Short and sweet is simply not enough right here on Hub Pages. Provide pictures, polls, and videos to break up the flow of the text, and provide interesting links. But most importantly, be yourself. Your readers are visiting your hub because they want to hear from you. Let your personality shine through. Let them see who you are, so they can enjoy visiting your hub.

Do You Have a Preference?

Do you care if your hub score reaches a particular number?

  • Yes, it must be in the 90s
  • Yes, it must be in the 80s
  • Yes, as long as it is above 75
  • I don't care

Don't Just Write and Run

Many writers love to "write and run." This technique involves throwing out a lot of keywords, jotting down a quick article, and moving on to the next piece. But this isn't what your readers want to see. Your readers want to get to know you. They want to learn about the topic. they want to hear your opinion. You need to spend quality time with them and teach them about your subject. Don't just write something down and run away.

In this age of the internet, writing has become a lost art. But there are still plenty of readers who will appreciate you for who you are. Spend time with them, and talk about subjects that they want to discuss. Give them ideas, describe some of your bullet points, and provide examples. When you show your reader that you love your work, your reader will want to spend time with you.

When you spend this extra time improving your articles, your true style will shine through. Your readers will understand your examples more clearly. And then you'll receive an added benefit: Your hub score will increase. It's a win-win situation. And you can feel good because you have provided a quality product.

Stop and Enjoy a Cup of Coffee

Figuratively speaking, it will greatly benefit you if you stop by the neighbor's house for a cup of coffee. Visit other authors here on Hub Pages. Read their hubs, enjoy their articles, and leave some insightful comments. When you leave comments, make sure you include a few keywords about their articles, so Google AdSense will be happy with their hubs too. You definitely want to be a good neighbor.

But make sure you truly do stop for a visit. Spend some time focusing on your neighbor's hubs. Get to know them a little better and form some friendships. One hand truly does wash another. You will get to know each other, and perhaps you might even form a friendship. In the meantime, you can form a mutually beneficial relationship. Each time you comment on each other's hubs, you are making their hub more active in Google's eyes. This increases the possibility for them to profit from their hub. They will, I am certain, return the favor.

Increase Your Traffic

As more visitors come to your hubs, you will find that your personal hub score (aka, hubber score) will increase as well. Of course, you can sit and wait for people to come to you, or you can encourage them to come to the party. I prefer the latter.

As mentioned above, one of the easiest ways to find visitors is to build friendships right here on Hub Pages. You can visit other people's hubs and leave comments, or you could read their hubs often and send them fan mail. You could also become their follower, and hope that they will return the favor and follow you. Each will increase your magic number.

Another way to improve your score is to become active in the forums. I personally have never used this particular technique, since I work another job as well. So I find that my time is too limited to spend on the forums. Plus, I'm afraid I might enjoy it way too much and neglect my other duties, LOL. But that's another story for another day.

Creating backlinks is another way to increase the traffic to your hubs. Backlinks are fantastics tools. With these nifty little tools, you visit other websites and list links to your hubs there... and send your visitors to Hub Pages from those other websites. Slick, isn't it? But again, we shall talk about that in another hub that will be coming up soon. I've already started outlining that article.

This is very helpful! Until now I just treated my Hubber score as something that just happened, now I know what is going on behind the scenes. It's been floating in the mid-80's since I got my first hub up and running so I'll take that as a good sign and keep working until I make an "A" =)

Thanks for this information. My personal hub score has been hovering in the high 80s or low 90s for weeks, but suddenly went down to 86 today for no reason I can fathom, wah! Mind you, I didn't really know what the point of having a high hubber score was until I read this, but I've for some reason been wanting to get it into the 90s anyway, LOL.

Great tips for increasing your hub score. I can testify to your guide to increase your numbers as when I do as you say, I have high 90's score and yet since the holidays I've been a bit lazy with the back linking, in fact since Nov. YIKES, I've been lazy, just writing and well not doing what it takes and my score is falling.

However, I must say this, my earnings are still good and climbing so I'm a bit confused as to the whole score thingy. You've helped to clear it up and I will vow to work harder for the greater good of the community!

Well done and helpful! :) Katie

Hi, DonnaWallace, thanks for publishing such an informative, helpful hub. I've been a member of HubPages for about 5 weeks, and am learning as much as I can, as fast as I can. I didn't understand the significance of the personal Hub score until I read this piece; but being naturally competitive, I've been pleased to see mine gradually rising, currently fluctuating around 90. I guess my report card would say "Making steady progress, must try harder!" Thanks again, cheers.

Great hub about the always mystical, somewhat elusive, personal hub score (aka hubber score.)

I pretty much follow the steps you've listed here not so much to raise my score (although it is nice to see it rise, and it does help more readers find you) but because it makes the Hub Pages experience more meaningful and interactive. I enjoy reading the quality hubs of others and follow authors whose work I admire. I also love leaving, and receiving comments. Before joining Hub Pages writing was a solitary activity, but here there's a supportive community and it's easy to learn from the comments and work of others.

Thanks for this well written explanation of what the scores mean. It shows that there is some valid reasoning behind the scoring system.
